Very nice Pat

Looks like you even hollowed out the back of the S.

Also looks like you use at least 4 3de files to put togther one piece.

keep up the good work!!

files

Post by p schmidt » Sun Aug 07, 2005 10:15 am

thanks guys, i designed the front "s" first then copied shape for the front of the back side keeping in mind the hinges they were the real test to see if i could get it right. then i saved my file and used it for the inside i mirrored the shapes then adjusted everything for the inside cuts including the "s" i also had to figure the recess cuts for the hinges to fit into the oposite side of the locket i'm including both files for study the hinges were the hardest to get right for double sided milling i had to have half the tube on the first mill and the other half on the flipped side so i had to start with 1mm of extra stock on top and bottom in order to cut the tube hinges run the files check out the virtual mod. rendering to see better! look at the inside view in 3d mode and rotate around and you'll see the cut outs for the tubes to fit in the oposite sides of the locket keep in mind when looking at the inside file all the underneith has already be cut away and the wax model is being held by the wax tabs also the tubes had to centered to the locket (side view) as they are 2.5mm thick and the total thickness of the locket is apx.6mm

skull

Post by p schmidt » Fri Jan 27, 2006 2:19 pm

say guys i don't really use my mill nearly enough but every once in a while i do a job .just so happened that after collin posted his scanned skull i had a customer come in (apx3 days later) and wanted a skull ring so colin i hope you don't mind i used your skull and made some bones in 3dengrave and made a shank. the skull and shank are 14kty and the bones are white gold. ring is set with 2- 2mm. tsavorites for the eyes i made this in 3 pieces i'm sure i could have done it on the "rotary" but i don't have one yet maybe i'll break down and get that one jeff!

total sale $650

the pics aren't so good the wax is a little smaller than the final as i was just checking for overall size

hey pat

Very nasty looking ring  That kind of sharing of designs and the ability to use it, is the forum and the members at its best. A great benefit to all.

It would be interesting to see how that ring would have turned out on the rotary. Maybe something you can play with when you get one.

Keep up the great work.

cutters

Post by p schmidt » Sun Jul 01, 2007 5:19 pm

here's some screen shots of the cutters (for those of you who can't open a rhino file) I've been making I just learning how to capture the screen shots so I hope I'm not repeating myself to much bear with me anyway I made some cutters for cutting the seat ,leaving the stone and prongs all in one step if anyone wants the files for the cutters let me know I made them in rhino they can be scaled or surface extruded for your needs

also is a shot of a ring to be milled in a two sided flip then glued together notice the hollwed out center to lighten

box top

Post by p schmidt » Thu Mar 20, 2008 12:12 pm

here's something I'm starting to work on for my porfolio ..a box...
this is the top, it will be set with diamonds ,seed pearls ,or enamel haven't figured that out yet.. I milled this on the mdx15 as a practice the bit broke before I could finishI need to tweak the design then I will mill two sided on the 40... this was my design off some faberge pieces I was looking at ...the black is the wax base, not part of the design

Hinge cast

Post by Winstone » Thu Mar 20, 2008 2:00 pm

Pat,
If you use the lead of a mechanical pencil and put the hinge wax over it, placing it with the wax prior to casting. The lead will hold the wax in the flask, burnout, but not leave the flask as a void. So when you cast the locket, you will have a smooth ash filled tube where the lead used to be. This will make cleaning out the hinge hole very easy. Very little cleanup and no bubbles in the hole. .... winstone
ps there are many guages of mechanical lead that can be used.w

wax

Post by p schmidt » Thu Jun 05, 2008 12:24 pm

here's one I did in rhino using curve boolen
size 83mm x33 x 3 mm
the scratches are the original wax surface that I did not surface off (didn't need to wouldn't affect the design)
