From Colin's Bench 2
Hi Everyone, Here's an update on the Wolf head job that I posted in Dr PICZA. As you can see the job is more involved than just scanning the head. The design is a pendant for a man & is based on a Viking amulet known as a "Thors Hammer". Customer had researched the design & this is what they wanted....

Hi Pat, Both the Diana & Aphrodite waxes are for the same Jeweller. The total for both waxes was $800.00 Aust. (Trade) Aussie Jewellers get around $35.00 Hr (Trade) Being Trade jobs, I had to give a quote before the go ahead & it's always a "guesstimate" with hand carving. Needless to say, I didn't ...

Thanks guys, For most jobs, I've found that the same wax as your carving with, will work OK for building back up & then recarving. The main thing is to not over heat the wax that your adding, as it tends to change it's properties. As a rule of thumb when using a wax welder, if it starts to smoke, yo...

How do I carve?
Hi everyone, Michael wrote; My question is when you are carving those small figures do you carve on a block and then free the wax or do carve it like we see with that small like area at the top. With the wax being slightly fragile I was curious how you hold to get the extreme detail. Thought that th...

Hey Ken, I'm not sure, as I've had to do a heap of adjustments in regards to adding extra hair, change face, etc, etc. I think there's around 20-25hrs total for the girl & shell? Mind you, that's been spread over 4 weeks between other jobs. Originally I hoped that I'd be able to completely mill the ...

Aphrodite wax
Thought that you all might like to see another milling & handcarve job. This is for the same Jeweller that ordered Diana wax. His customer is Greek & wanted to create heirloom quality pendants, to give to his daughters. Milled the shell pendant as a concave blank, then hand carved details. Aphrodite...

Thanks guys, Michael, as soon as I can get hold of a digital camera I'll post some photos of my workshop. (originally my garage) How did I take photos of those waxes, I hear you ask? I use an old Kodak webcam that's connected to my office computer via USB cable (wont reach to workshop) Jeff, I've on...

Carving info
Thanks guys, for all the nice compliments. In Australia there's no formal training in regards to wax carving, so I'm mostly self taught. I did my apprenticeship at a large factory & learnt hand skills mainly suited to mass production work, but no wax carving. Members of the Gold & Silversmith...

Welcome Ben
Welcome to the Club Ben,
Having good bench skills & knowing how to a carve wax is one thing, but trying to reproduce these things on computer is another.
Having computer knowledge will be a definite advantage for you both.
I look forward to seeing the results of your combined efforts.
regards Colin

Here's two waxes that have been made for other Jewellers. Pendant of Diana from Greek Mythology. Milled pendant background, the "Diana" insert was hand carved. (until I can figure out how to do this on the mill?) I believe that this is to be cast in 18ctYG The RAN logo was a straight forward milling...
